Hurricane Francine will strike Louisiana on Wednesday and bring strong winds and possible tornadoes to South Mississippi as it moves inland and north, forecasters say.

Western Hancock and Pearl River counties could see more than 39 mile per hour winds. Gusty winds are expected across the Mississippi Coast, and risk of tropical storm-force winds lessens to the east.

Forecasters expect strong winds to down trees and power lines Wednesday afternoon and Thursday throughout Mississippi.

No widespread outages were reported as of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

How to prepare for outages

The National Weather Service says residents should keep phones and electronic devices charged, fill gas tanks and keep cash on hand to prepare for outages.

During outages, the agency recommends residents keep refrigerators and freezers closed and disconnect appliances to prevent surges.

After outages, residents should never touch downed power lines. Any food exposed to temperatures above 40 degrees for more than two hours should be thrown out, the NWS says. And the agency recommends waiting 10 to 15 minutes before reconnecting appliances to allow the electrical system to stabilize.
