Restaurant News & Reviews

These 24 restaurants are open now or coming soon on the Mississippi Coast

It will be a summer of good eating in South Mississippi as a favorite Coast restaurant returns and several new restaurants open or will debut soon.

The restaurant boom is happening across all three Coast counties and adds a variety of come-as-you-are and fine dining options.

Darwell’s Cafe has reopened in Long Beach, with Darwell Yeager III now overseeing the kitchen.

In a nod to Long Beach once being known as “Radish Capital of the World,” Radish will open soon as an upscale Southern restaurant in downtown, taking over the Half Baked Subs building.

A new Japanese restaurant is coming to Edgewater Mall where Bonefish Grill once operated. Atrium Cafe has expanded at Beau Rivage Resort & Casino and a new Italian restaurant is coming to Gulfport.

Here is the list of newly opened, remodeled and coming soon restaurants in South Mississippi:

Darwell’s Cafe caught the attention of Guy Fieri from The Food Network, who featured the Long Beach restaurant on “The Best of Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives.” Closed since October 2020 when Darwell Yeager Jr. had health issues, it’s now back in Long Beach with his son, Darwell Yeager III, making red beans and rice with smoked sausage, crawfish etouffee with blackened shrimp and other Southern favorites.

Radish is the creation of William and Brooke Rester, whose Dolce Bakeshop in Long Beach is known for its classic Italian desserts and Southern favorites. The new restaurant at 200 Jeff Davis Ave. is scheduled to open in June and will serve lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday plus Sunday brunch. Brooke Rester said the menu will be Southern food elevated in taste and style, and they’ll be planting the trademark radishes in window boxes.

Mangiamo Italian Restaurant is opening at 1423 Magnolia St., Gulfport, at the corner of Cowan Road and Magnolia Street and across from Captain Al’s. The website says the restaurant is coming soon and application has been made for a liquor license.

See-Wee-Roll, an all-you-can-eat style Japanese restaurant, will open on the south side of Edgewater Mall in Biloxi, in the space once occupied by Bonefish Grill. The restaurant will offer sushi, sashimi, hibachi and a variety of Japanese dishes.

The Almanett Hotel & Bistro on Second Street in Gulfport has a new outdoor venue, Almonette Under the Palms. Owner Rip Daniels said seven tables on the terrace and veranda are set up for people to enjoy food and drink outdoors. “There’s a demand for it,” he said, and the picturesque setting along second street makes it a natural. The outdoor venue is open until about sunset and live entertainment in the pergola on the weekends adds to the appeal. The menu is casual and affordable, with fried or grilled shrimp or catfish, blackened chicken breast, grilled spicy wings and catfish or shrimp tacos.

Atrium Cafe at Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi has expanded into the atrium space to give a view of the flowers and decorations under the soaring glass ceiling. The restaurant is open 24/7 and has new decor and a refreshed menu. Among the choices are Back Bay Benedict made with Gulf shrimp and fried green tomatoes, Buffalo chicken salad, cajun pasta and chicken pot pie.

Roberts Place Cafe, next to Robin’s Nest in Pass Christian, opened this year and now has breakfast and lunch Monday, Tuesday, Thursday Friday and Saturday. Southern cuisine in a casual atmosphere describes the food and the fare at the restaurant at 233 Davis Ave. Among the specialties presented by Dorothy Roberts and her staff are red beans and rice with grilled sausage, greens and corn bread and double chocolate chunk caramel-filled pastry with vanilla bean ice cream.

Heavenly Grounds is a new Christian coffee shop on Mississippi 57 in Vancleave in the same building as Family Dollar. In addition to a variety of drip coffees, flavors and espresso, the coffee shop serves bagels, muffins and apple fritters. Christian events and a PTSD event for veterans are on the calendar. The owners invite the public to drop by for a prayer. “We want to connect with the community of Vancleave one prayer and one cup of coffee at a time,” their Facebook page says.

Portside Cafe has opened at 107 Court St. in downtown Bay St. Louis. Owners Lesley and Matthew Touart put together a menu of favorites like pizza, burgers, sandwiches, salads and ice cream. Breakfast is available Saturday and Sunday.

The Scratch Kitchen Restaurant, Bar, Food Truck

on Government St., Ocean Springs, has evolved from a food truck to the debut of a restaurant in April. Owners Billy and Brittany Alexander wow customers with their fruit nachos, smoked pulled pork, tapas and street corn. They have two bars, indoors and out, at the new Scratch Kitchen, and a menu of signature craft cocktails. They also have entertainment every weekend.

The newly redesigned Atrium Cafe at Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi spills out into the atrium and is open 24 hours. It is one of dozens of restaurants that are new, remodeled, coming soon or recently opened in South Mississippi.
