A 2nd Jersey Mike’s is coming to the Coast as D’Iberville sub shop announces opening date

Bret Dunnaway worked for food distributors in South Mississippi, and now he’s about to open two locations of Jersey Mike’s sub shop on the Coast.

The first location was announced in March. It’s opening June 1 at The Promenade in D’Iberville next to Dickey’s Barbecue Pit.

That date depends on the supply chain, he added, and being able to get the materials needed to complete building renovations.

Social media posts responding to news of the first Jersey Mike’s on the Coast were very receptive, and Dunaway told the Sun Herald on Tuesday that he “just a signed a lease” for a Gulfport location.

That second spot will be at Crossroads off I-10 and U.S. 49, he said, and that Gulfport sub shop will open this fall.

“Jersey Mike’s is awesome. The club is great and the cheese steak is better,” one person commented on Facebook.

“They make awesome subs and even have gluten free bread for those that need it,” another comment said.

“When you order just say ‘I’ll have it Mike’s Way,’ (onions, lettuce, tomato, red wine vinegar, olive oil, and spices) plus anything else you’d like. It’s simply faster,” a third commenter said.

Dunnaway says the philosophy of the company is the quality’s got to be the same as in 1956, when Mike’s Subs opened on the Jersey Shore at Point Pleasant, New Jersey.

Everything is cooked to order, he said. Tomatoes are ripened at the store and sliced fresh every day. The bread is baked daily on the premises.

Another important part of the franchise, said Dunnaway, is selecting a charity in the community.

He will be partnering with Carter’s Champions. The first three days after the D’Iberville store opens, he said, those who make a $3 donation to this organization that supports local residents battling breast cancer will receive a voucher for a free sandwich. He estimates that 3,000 to 5,000 free sub cards will be given away during the opening.

Dunnaway, who owns other Jersey Mike’s franchised in Mississippi, previously worked for Coast Foods and for US Foods and his territory included the Mississippi Coast region.

Now he is hiring for the D’Iberville store and said it hasn’t been as difficult because the average staff member earns about $15 an hour.
