Residents of 8 MS counties can now apply for Hurricane Ida aid to make storm repairs

Public and individual assistance is now available to help pay for repairs, two months after Hurricane Ida devastated parts of south Louisiana and damaged homes and businesses in South Mississippi.

Gov. Tate Reeves said in a news release Saturday that his request for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for counties in Mississippi impacted by Ida has been approved by President Joe Biden.

The hurricane came ashore Aug. 29 as a Category 4 storm, making landfall near Port Fourchon with sustained winds of 150 mph. Mississippi saw heavy rain, flooding and strong winds that caused widespread power outages and roof damage.

Individual assistance was approved in Hancock, Harrison, Jackson and Pearl River counties in South Mississippi, plus Amite, Pike, Walthall and Wilkinson counties.

Residents and business owners in those counties can apply for grants for temporary housing and home repairs, or low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses.

To apply, register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or call 1-800-621-3362 or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired.

Public assistance was approved for 19 counties, with five of the six counties of South Mississippi on the list. They include Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Pearl River and George counties.

Stone County is not on the list.

Eleven people were killed or injured in George County when Highway 26 collapsed after heavy rain and flooding brought by Hurricane Ida.

Public assistance helps local governments and eligible non-profit agencies repair or replace facilities damaged in the storm..
