I-10 near Buc-ee’s will be closed tonight for bridge demolition. Here’s the latest
The westbound lanes of Interstate 10 at Menge avenue Exit 24 will close overnight Wednesday to demolish a bridge.
The demolition, which the contractor must complete in just one night, originally was scheduled for Monday night but was postponed.
Mississippi Department of Transportation announced the schedule:
▪ All lanes of I-10 westbound at Menge Avenue Exit 24 will close overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9.
▪ The eastbound lanes of I-10 will close on another night. MDOT will notify the public when the I-10 eastbound closure is imminent.
Crews have already removed much of the deck of the bridge over the westbound lanes of the bridge, said Anna Ehrgott, MDOT public information officer. The closure is needed to remove the beams.
Instead of a detour miles out of the way during the closures, all traffic will be directed onto the exit ramp at exit 24 and immediately back onto the interstate at the entrance ramp, said Kelly Castleberry, Mississippi Department of Transportation district engineer for the Sixth District.
Traffic will be down to a single lane as it detours.
The $15 million redesign of the interchange by Harrison County is in preparation for a new Buc-ee’s travel center and other development coming to that area of Harrison County.
Once the bridge is demolished, a new, wider bridge will be rebuilt as part of the $15 million, 13-month project. Two lanes of traffic will be open in each direction during the rebuild, with barriers in place to protect workers as traffic speeds by.
