Bridge demolition begins on I-10 near Mississippi Buc-ee’s site. When will lanes close?

Demo days on Interstate 10 has crews taking down the overpass at Mississippi Exit 24 before building a new interchange to handle the traffic a new Buc-ee’s travel center and other development are expected to generate.

The latest update on the $15 million, 13-month project is demolition of the bridge deck on the overpass is under way, said Anna Ehrgott, MDOT public information officer. The work currently affects the westbound lanes of the interstate near Long Beach and Pass Christian.

This requires intermittent lane closures over the next few weeks, she said.

Safety devices were installed, she said, which prevent debris from getting in the way of traffic.

All of this work is leading up to the removal of the entire span of the bridge over the interstate.

That work will require closing I-10 over two nights, said Kelly Castleberry, Mississippi Department of Transportation district engineer for the Sixth District.

The interstate will be closed one full night eastbound and one full night in the westbound lanes, he said, and may or may not happen on consecutive nights.

Instead of a detour miles out of the way during the closures, he said all traffic will be directed onto the exit ramp and immediately back onto the interstate at the entrance ramp — but will be down to one lane.

Ehrgott said an update will be issued soon with dates for the interstate closures.
