A Gulfport mother and her three children were coming home from July 4th festivities when the vehicle the family was in got struck by a train in the city’s downtown.

Gulfport police on Tuesday night said four people were inside of a sedan that was hit by a train near the 25th Street (U.S. 49) and 14th Avenue intersection.

Sgt. Jason Ducré told the Sun Herald that all of the occupants were rescued from the vehicle and taken to hospitals.

Gulfport police, American Medical Response and Gulfport Fire Department all responded to the scene. First responders were seen checking for evidence under train cars and the car the victims were in, mangled from the collision, was towed away.

Witnesses nearby who heard the impact told the Sun Herald at the scene Tuesday night that they heard children crying as they were being rescued.

The family of the four victims confirmed through Facebook on Thursday that the mother and her three children are all expected to recover from their injuries. The children are in Children’s Hospital in New Orleans.

A GoFundMe account has been set up by the family to help with medical expenses from the crash. Family also will be traveling back and forth from Gulfport to New Orleans daily to be with the mother and her children, said family members and GoFundMe organizers Elizabeth Harrell and Rosie Hardimon. GoFundMe did not identify the family other than first names.

The crash remains under investigation.
