4 people hospitalized after train and car collide in downtown Gulfport

Four people were hospitalized Tuesday night after a car collided with a train near downtown Gulfport, police said.

The crash involved only one vehicle and the status of its four occupants is not currently known, Gulfport Police spokesman Jason Ducre said in a text.

Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer said he was not aware of any fatalities as of 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Gulfport Police said on Twitter they responded to “a vehicle accident involving a train” near 25th Ave. and 14th St. about 9:30 p.m. They said the railroad is blocked from 22nd Ave. to Broad Ave. and asked residents to avoid the area.

Gulfport Police, Fire and American Medical Response were on the scene Tuesday night.

Witnesses also on the scene said they heard an impact and were concerned about victims inside the vehicle. A police officer was seen near the intersection crossing with a flashlight and looking for evidence near the tracks.

Ducre said he was unsure at the moment how the crash occurred or who was in the vehicle.
