Spring break, Black Beach Weekend events at Coast Coliseum canceled due to coronavirus
Add Black Beach Weekend to the events canceled by the new coronavirus.
“Due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic, it is in the best interest of public health that Twerkfest 7, Foam Fest and other upcoming planned Black Beach Weekend events at the MS Coast Coliseum be canceled,” Derrian Burns, promotions manager for Black Beach Weekend, said Friday. “We are truly sorry for the inconvenience but public health is our best interest at this time.”
This cancellation covers the major events during spring break, which was scheduled to start April 2.
The Coast Coliseum also announced Friday that Spring Jam 2020 concert on April 4 was canceled and all refunds will be honored at point of purchase.
The MS Gulf Coast Spring Break page posted on Facebook later in the day Friday that all spring break events are canceled and refunds would be issued.
Biloxi police estimated 30,000 people came to the city for the spring break festivities in 2019, which is about the same number as in 2018, filling restaurants, hotels, casinos and other businesses.
Biloxi Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich said Thursday he was concerned about large events that attract thousands to the city.
“We hope that promoters of other events that attract tens of thousands from other states, such as spring break, which includes numerous gatherings in nightclubs and lounges, will consider canceling their events in deference to public health and welfare,” he said.
Many other events on the Coast are being postponed or canceled due to the coronavirus. All the March concerts and some of those scheduled in April at the Coast Coliseum are being rescheduled.
Editor’s note: This story originally contained a quote from a promoter saying events outside the Coliseum had not yet been canceled, but later that day those also were canceled.
