Mississippi Coast mom struck by train in downtown Gulfport dies from her injuries

A young mother whose car was struck by a train in downtown Gulfport on July 4 has died from her injuries, Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer confirmed Friday.

Antoinette Wynn and her three children had gone to celebrate Independence Day that evening and were headed home in her car when she got stuck on the tracks near 25th Avenue and 14th Street.

Gulfport Police, AMR ambulance and Gulfport fire officials arrived on scene quickly and got Wynn and her children out of the mangled car. Witnesses nearby said they heard the young victims crying as they were rescued and sent to get medical attention.

Wynn was taken to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport, where she died Thursday, Swizter said. Her family was by her side.

Wynn’s body was taken to Jackson on Friday, Switzer said, as she was an organ donor. Her three children were taken to a New Orleans hospital after the crash and were expected to recover.

Wynn’s family announced her death Friday on Facebook and asked for privacy, adding that funeral arrangements will be announced soon.

“Please keep her children, parents and family in your thoughts and prayers,” the family said.
