A large traffic jam on Interstate 10 near the Mississippi-Louisiana state line on Tuesdays is causing hours of delays for drivers.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said congestion has led to delays on I-10 west near Exit 2 in Waveland for most of the day.

The congestion was expected to last for about more 4 hours, MDOT said at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Those commuting to New Orleans for Mardi Gras or traveling to Louisiana should proceed with caution and prepare to wait.

This portion of I-10 is a heavily trafficked area for Hancock County residents who drive to Slidell, New Orleans or the Northshore for work.

The recent spat of congestion began in January after a fiery wreck involving a truck carrying new BMW vehicles. That incident caused damaged to a bridge near the state line, where one lane of it remains closed until MDOT can make repairs.

The area has also been a hot bed for accidents that cause backups including a recently flipped tractor trailer.
