COVID cases again rising fastest in Jackson County as South MS sees 17 deaths this week

The Mississippi State Department of Health on Sunday reported 1,207 new coronavirus cases and 15 more deaths statewide.

In the lower six counties, there were 113 new cases and 2 more deaths, after the second deadliest day Saturday with 6 deaths.

The new deaths are in Harrison and Jackson counties.

The state’s seven-day average of new cases reached a new high of 1,381, and it’s been over 1,000 since July 20. South Mississippi’s seven-day average is also at an all-time high at 168.

In the past week, MSDH has reported 1,030 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 17 deaths in South Mississippi.

Spread of the virus is again rising fastest in Jackson County, which added 467 cases since Monday, followed by 354 in Harrison, 65 in Hancock, 64 in George, 56 in Pearl River and 24 in Stone County.

Total cases in South Mississippi are:

George — 243 (10 new)

Hancock — 269 (22 new)

Harrison — 1,810 (36 new)

Jackson — 1,582 (30 new)

Pearl River — 427 (8 new)

Stone — 128 (7 new)
