South MS has its 2nd biggest COVID-19 death toll as the state announces 1,434 cases
July 24 proved to be the second most deadly day of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Mississippi with the state health department reporting six deaths for the southernmost six counties on Saturday.
It was the most deaths announced for the area since there were eight back on May 7. Harrison County had three deaths, Jackson County accounted for two and George County had one.
With 10 deaths over the last two days, there have been 106 total COVI9-19 deaths in the region.
There were 1,434 new cases and 17 deaths announced for the entire state on Saturday, bringing the seven-day average to a new high of 1,321.57.
The state announced 195 new cases for South Mississippi with Harrison County accounting for 80.
Jackson County had an additional 71 cases Saturday to bring its total to 437 over the last six days. Jackson County, which had 425 cases back on June 23, has had 1,552 confirmed cases this year.
The number of Mississippi patients hospitalized with COVID-19 dropped slightly on Saturday, from an all-time high of 975 to 961. There were another 211 people in hospitals with suspected cases of the coronavirus.
Saturday’s numbers showed that 295 patients were in intensive care as of Friday — a new high mark for the state.
The daily number of patients on ventilators took a slight dip from a single-day record of 163 to 159.
There have been 51,097 COVID-19 deaths and 1,480 deaths in Mississippi this year.

Harrison — 1,774 (80 new)
Jackson — 1,481 (71 new)
Pearl River — 419 (16 new)
