Mississippi has 675 new coronavirus cases. Harrison County nears top of state ranking.

After Sunday’s report of single-digit new cases of coronavirus in South Mississippi, Monday’s report showed it wasn’t to last.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 78 new cases in the lower six counties, with a 46 of those in Harrison County.

Harrison County had the second-highest number of new cases in the state for the past week, up from fourth in the state the prior week.

After three days of declines, new cases statewide shot up to 675, MSDH reported.

From the 550 new cases reported Friday, the numbers dropped over the weekend to 465 on Saturday and 361 Sunday.

None of the 20 deaths reported today were in South Mississippi, which has held at 72 total deaths since June 23.

The state has 26,567 total cases and 1,059 since March 11. Presumed recoveries now stand at 19,388.

Total cases Tuesday in South Mississippi are:

  • George —72 (7 new)
  • Hancock — 120 (4 new)
  • Harrison — 688 (46 new)
  • Jackson —493 (18 new)
  • Pearl River — 237 (1 new)
  • Stone — 50 (2 new)

Ingalls Shipbuilding in Jackson County reported 19 new cases in one week. Total cases as of Sunday are 76, with 45 of those employees eligible to return to work.
