Students can return to Biloxi classrooms for 2020-21 school year. But plans are ‘fluid.’

Students and teachers in the Biloxi School District are coming back to campus but must wear a mask to class for the 2020-21 school year, the district announced Friday on Facebook.

All faculty, staff and students returning to schools will wear a mask provided by the district, the post said. Masks won’t be required when social distancing can be practiced.

The district is asking parents to please bring their children by private car to school if possible because social distancing on a bus “will be harder,” the Facebook post said.

For those not comfortable learning in a traditional classroom during the coronavirus pandemic, distance learning is an option. Students who choose distance learning must commit for one semester and attend scheduled online classes.

The district said their back-to-school plan is “fluid and subject to change based on many factors.”

It took the district a month to develop their plan to bring students to campuses in the district and said they considered input from parents and students.

The announcement of opening campuses in Biloxi comes during a week where coronavirus cases are surging in Harrison County. There were more than 1,000 COVID-19 cases reported across the state Thursday, the highest one-day figure since the Mississippi State Department of Health began recording the data.

“Let’s work together to make this happen for our students and community,” the school district said in their Facebook post.
