Interstate 110 South is open again to the beach in Biloxi. What’s next for drivers?

Sitting in traffic and alternate routes are over now that I-110 southbound is open again.

Biloxi sent out notice Monday afternoon that traffic is flowing again on the highway south of the Bayview Avenue exit.

The bridge was closed for safety concerns since a trailer stored under a bridge on the highway caught fire Sept. 19.

“Based on new information received as part of the I-110 bridge repair plans, the Mississippi Department of Transportation is opening I-110 S to traffic,” MDOT said Monday in a press release.

MDOT said load ratings performed on the bridge “definitively” show it is structurally sound to hold traffic.

Inspectors from MDOT inspect the underside of the I-110 bridge following a fire that damaged the bridge. The bridge is currently closed to southbound traffic.

Safety continues to be the priority as the bridge repairs are made, MDOT said.

An emergency process is expected to begin this week to select a contractor to perform the repairs. Once the contract is approved, MDOT immediately will issue notice to proceed, and the contractor will begin work.

The repairs are expected to take a month, depending on weather and the availability of materials.

Traffic should see minimal impacts, MDOT said.
