Part of Interstate 110 in Biloxi is closed indefinitely after fire. Here’s what we know
Interstate 110 South is closed indefinitely after a fire on Tuesday night caused damage to the I-110 bridge.
All lanes of I-110 South between Bayview Avenue (Exit 1D) and U.S. 90 are currently closed and all traffic traveling south is being diverted onto Bayview Avenue.
The interstate was closed after a fire under the bridge around 8:30 p.m caused damage to the bridge. The bridge was closed for motorist safety, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
“We observed damage to the bridge columns and the underside of the bridge,” said Mississippi Department of Transportation public information officer Anna Ehrgott. “A preliminary inspection was completed last night and that led to the closure of the southbound bridge.”
MDOT does not currently have a timeline for when the bridge will be reopened.
A preliminary inspection was already conducted, but a more detailed inspection will need to be completed before a timeline for repairs can be established. MDOT does not yet know when that inspection will be completed.
The bridge that is closed is a segmental tension bridge built in the early 1980s, which is different from standard bridges MDOT usually deals with, which could possibly make the process to reopen the bridge more complicated.
MDOT says it will provide updates on the timeline for reopening as soon as it can.
