Famous Dong Phuong king cakes are now for sale online. Dates are already selling out.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year on the Coast.
Hanukkah started last Sunday, Christmas is next weekend, New Year’s and Kwanzaa are right around the corner and best of all, today is the first day pre-orders are available for Dong Phuong king cakes.
This year, the James Beard Award-winning New Orleans bakery introduced a new way to order king cakes. Dong Phuong partnered with Goldbelly. You can use the online started accepting orders through the food e-commerce platform Monday morning.
For $69.95, you can ship a king cake to anywhere in the U.S., including your own front door. Goldbelly also has a $15 coupon available on the site. Time’s a-wastin.’ As of Monday afternoon, Goldbelly had already sold out the first four delivery dates and the earliest expected delivery is currently January 13.
On the Coast, Waveland Pharmacy is the most popular source of Don Phuong king cakes. During Mardi Gras season, the pharmacy sends a truck to Dong Phuong every morning at 5 a.m. and it carries back about seven cases of king cakes. The pharmacy opens its doors at 10 a.m.
“By 10:12, 10:15 at the latest, we’re sold out every day,” said Carolyn Hosty at Waveland Pharmacy. “I’ve never seen king cakes sell so fast.”
The pharmacy will reopen after the holidays on Jan. 3, but there is no word yet on the price or arrival of the king cakes. Hosty said to check the pharmacy’s Facebook page for updates.
The prices for king cakes vary every year, but last year’s prices at the pharmacy were between $27 and $34.
If you’re heading to New Orleans, in-store preorders will start Jan. 1 and be ready for pickup on Jan. 6, according to the folks at Dong Phuong. The Vietnamese bakery is located at 14207 Chef Menteur Hwy. in New Orleans. You can reach the bakery at info@dpbakery.com or 504-882-9878.
Whether you pre-order through Goldbelly or place your order directly from the bakery, you will have your pick of six flavors: pecan, coconut, almond crème, cream cheese, strawberry and cinnamon.
