Those who like to be the first to try a new restaurant will want to be in line Saturday morning when Parlor Doughnuts opens in Ocean Springs.

For the grand opening celebration, “This weekend will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days,” said owner Colten Burress. Regular hours starting Monday are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Customers who sign up online for the Parlor Perks App can get a free doughnut during the grand opening and on their birthday.

The store at 1418 Bienville Blvd. was a doughnut store next to where Winn-Dixie used to be, and where the city’s second ALDI will be opening.

Parlor Doughnuts has a drive-up window for convenience, yet at some point customers will want to go inside and experience the old-school Americana, mixed with a beach theme of sea blue mosaics.

Small batches of doughnuts are made all day and the aroma of doughnuts and coffee provides the kind of welcome reminiscent of when every home had a parlor.

These doughnuts are different. “It’s called a layered doughnut,” Burress said, with buttery layers on the inside, similar to a croissant, and a crispy outside that’s rolled in a sauce and layered with toppings.

“The French Toast is the most popular,” Burress said. The layered doughnut is flavored with a maple glaze, cinnamon sugar and a maple syrup drizzle creating a treat that some describe as “an elevated French toast stick.“

Also on the menu are 20 more choices of doughnuts— maple bacon and maple pecan, cookies and cream, peanut butter cream and carnival with colored sprinkles for kids. Those who love fruit can bite into a raspberry-filled doughnut, raspberry pistachio, strawberry shortcake and blueberry hill.

Every season is welcomed with new varieties of doughnuts, coffees and drinks. The pumpkin chai cheesecake, butter pecan praline and apple pie doughnuts with apple filling spice up the menu this fall.

They also have mini varieties, vegan, gluten-friendly and keto-friendly products, sausage biscuits, tacos and other breakfast sandwiches — even doggie doughnuts for the pups.

While the doughnuts are the stars, the beverage is equally big and diverse. Customers can get energized or sip a hot, cold or blended coffee like caramel macchiato. Teas and tea lattes, old-fashioned cream sodas and hot chocolate will turn a doughnut stop into a parlor party.

Burress opened one of the first franchise shops in Venice, Florida. “No one even knew anything about Parlor two years ago,” he said. Now everyone is talking about the shop and eager to get a first try.
