  • Health inspectors visited 160+ South Mississippi restaurants since July 10.
  • Three establishments received C grades for critical health code violations.
  • Most restaurants passed; 132 earned A ratings and 26 corrected issues for Bs.

Mississippi Department of Health inspectors checked out more than 160 restaurants and kitchens in South Mississippi since July 10 and found three with critical violations.

Restaurants generally are inspected once or twice a year and most pass with no problem. Over the past two weeks, 132 Coast restaurants scored an A for having no violations and 26 got a B when any violations were corrected during the inspection.

Twelve Cs were handed out so far in July with these three the most recent to score a C for violations that are critical:

Dan’s Poboys & Seafood, 4405 E Aloha Drive, Diamondhead, got its second C in a week when inspectors returned for a follow-up visit.

The restaurant was cited on July 9 for three violations and two more that were corrected during the inspection for a permit renewal.

On July 16, the other violations were corrected but the restaurant was cited for not posting its last C inspection grade.

These are the only Cs dating back to 2016.

Domino’s Pizza, 2310 Denny Ave., Pascagoula, was inspected July 16 for a permit renewal.

It was cited for:

No certified manager

This is the second C dating back to 2011. The prior C was in 2018.

Restaurant food managers must take a safety course and pass the test to get their certification. But getting and keeping certified managers has been a problem over the past few years as restaurants see a big turnover in employees.

Benndale Super Store at 5106 Mississippi 26 in Lucedale had a scheduled inspection July 15.

The store was cited for:

Inadequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

Food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized

A corrective follow-up inspection on July 17 showed the violations were corrected and the store scored a B.

This is the first C out of three inspections since January. The initial inspection in January was an A.
