Biloxi’s River Peach Bar & Grill is open for summer days on river. Slow down and enjoy
Food isn’t just food on the Mississippi Coast, it’s an experience.
And oftentimes a unique one for its many annual visitors. One of the tools of versatility the region’s chefs and entrepreneurs have taken advantage of is location. South Mississippi doesn’t just have the beaches stretching across the Sound at their disposal, but a meandering delta of crisscrossing rivers to work with, as well.
For every beach-side shrimp taco-enjoyer, there’s someone looking for a lazy fried-fish river retreat. The River Peach Bar and Grill offers just that.
Located at 12056 Cedar Lake Road in Biloxi near Woolmarket, the River Peach captures life at the corner of the Edward Redmond Memorial Bridge and the flowing waters of the Tchoutacabouffa River.
The building was the former location of Ya Momma’z House and much of the original signage is still in place. The River Peach has filled in and officially opened its doors in May.
The colorful raised building offers outdoor seating at the both ground and balcony seating. A dock allows customers to skip the traffic and float in for a meal.
There’s a stage for live music and a rolling playlist of Dixieland Delights and Buy Me a Boats swirling around the dining room and out onto the river.
The menu reflects the simplicity of the setting. Entrees include all the fried seafood fixings one could need: shrimp, flounder, oyster and soft shell crab.
You can get a po’boy stuffed with seafood, ham and cheese or fried green tomatoes. Or try the hamburger dressed in pickled onions on a sour dough bun.
The appetizers give visitors a range of ways to begin their meals from butter cracker tuna dip to seafood nachos.
I began with the crab cake egg rolls served with sweet chili and rémoulade. I love crab cake and I love egg rolls. Who knew you could hand-roll them together? My takeaway: more restaurants should do this.
That was followed up with the fried shrimp basket with a side of onion rings. Both were breaded perfectly and paired well with spicy cocktail sauce and rémoulade.
The onion rings were done especially well. Not overly thick and not overly salty, but rather just the right taste and portion.
The meal was enjoyed overlooking the Tchoutacabouffa. It was probably the longest I’ve spent at a single food review.
School is in session and the days are long and hot. The River Peach offers the reprieve. Slow down and take advantage.
