Beloved Coast biscuit shop is closing. Here’s the plan for the ‘magical community space.’
The Greenhouse on Porter soon will go from offering biscuits and fluff to strictly hosting celebrations and events as the Ocean Springs restaurant closes and becomes an event space.
Jessie Zenor and Kait Sukiennik, who knew each other for a month before they teamed opened the restaurant at 404 Porter Ave., announced their decision on social media and in their email newsletter.
“After a lot of soul searching, the Greenhouse on Porter, as we know it, will close its doors on Nov. 28,” they said.
Greenhouse on Porter will remain open as an event space for birthday parties, weddings and other occasions.
“We will also continue to host the occasional music nights, art market, workshops and sometimes open the bar just because,” they said.
And the Greenhouse Biloxi at 152 GE Ohr Street, will remain open. It will continue serving biscuits, coffee, cocktails, sandwiches, quiche and providing catering. That location is part of the District on Howard, where more restaurants and entertainment venues will be opening soon.
“We love what we do and have no plans to stop,” Zenor and Sukiennik said in their message. “We have big dreams for the future so Stay tuned.”
Good times & COVID challenges
They described the Greenhouse on Porter as “a magical community space” for more than 6 years.
“Babies have taken their first steps in the shop, folks have fallen in love and married here, we have danced our hearts out together on numerous occasions, shared the best news and the hardest news.
“We’ve read books together, created art, shared cocktails and biscuits. We have competed with each other in the biscuit tournament, joined together for group bike rides, welcomed tourists, and most importantly, we have all become better friends and a closer community,” they said.
This past year and a half has been a struggle for restaurants during the coronavirus.
In August, the Greenhouse Biloxi restaurant went to shorter hours the first week of August and then closed for two weeks as COVID-19 cases surged and hiring became a challenge.
Going out with a flourish
Greenhouse on Porter will host some November events before closing:
▪ Nov 11-13: Best of Oxford Film Fest
▪ Nov 26: Music by Cary Hudson
▪ Nov 27: Music by Symone French. Snacks by Také Box
▪ Nov 28: Community Potluck. Bring a dish, and good memories (and maybe a chair too).
