Hancock hires new girls basketball coach
From the student to the master.
That’s how Brooke Glass is likely feeling after she was recently named Hancock’s new girls basketball coach.
A 2004 Hancock graduate and former head coach of the middle school program, Glass replaces her former coach, Pam Slayton, who stepped down this offseason after 16 seasons at HHS to return to Slidell, La.
“Hancock is in my blood. I look at it as I learned from the best as a player and I got to coach with her, so I want to implement a lot of the stuff I learned from her,” said Glass, who posted a 31-9 record with the Hancock middle school program before spending last season as Slayton’s varsity assistant. “I feel like I got to take a lot from her.
“It’s a lot different learning from her as a coach than as a player. She was very good at explaining in-depth fundamentals.”
Keeping the tradition
Hancock athletics director Jamie Sisco said he was proud to keep Slayton’s tradition alive with his latest hire.
“I first want to thank Pam Slayton for all she did for Hancock basketball. The respect I have for her as an opponent and co-worker is second to none,” Hancock athletics director Jamie Sisco said in a statement. “We are fired up to have Coach Glass as our head coach. Brooke brings the two major qualities we were looking for, quality and stability. In terms of basketball, she is second to none in background and knowledge.
“In terms of life, she will be an outstanding role model that our young people desperately need in this day and age. She knows our kids and community very well, and I think our community will continue to give amazing support to our girls basketball program.”
More defensive
Glass, who played at Southeastern Louisiana after graduating high school, said she also plans to draw from her college days in molding her Lady Hawks.
“I want to make basketball fun again,” she said. “I want the girls to realize how much fun the game can be. We’re going to get after folks defensively and let the offense come from that.
“I think it’s an exciting change of pace.”
