Isaiah Canaan signs with Chicago Bulls
Former Biloxi High standout Isaiah Canaan signed a two-year, $2.2 million contract with the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday.
Canaan played last season with the Philadelphia 76ers, averaging 11 points a game. The three-year veteran shot 36 percent from 3-point range, ranking 15th in the NBA.
“I’m just looking forward to another great opportunity,” Canaan told The Philadelphia Inquirer last week.
Chicago will likely bring Canaan off the bench as another scoring threat to complement Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo, its prized free agent signees.
The Bulls have made a number of moves after finishing 42-40 and missing the playoffs. They traded All-Star point guard Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks and used their lottery selection on Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine.
“We are excited to add Isaiah to our group,” Bulls general manager Gar Forman said in a press release. “We feel his ability to knock down perimeter shots will be an asset to our team.”
Canaan played at Murray State from 2009 to 2013 and was a second-round pick, the 34th overall selection, of the Houston Rockets in the 2013 NBA Draft. As a rookie, he played for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA Development League. He averaged 21 points and eight assists with the NBADL team.
On Feb. 19, 2015, Canaan was traded to Philadelphia for K.J. McDaniels. He scored a career-high 31 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder a month later.
Canaan, 25, was the Sun Herald’s Boys Player of the Year after leading Biloxi to a Class 5A state title in 2009.
