A 6-year-old boy shot in the stomach Friday evening in Gulfport has died from his wounds, Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said.
Zaylan Sparkman of Gulfport was pronounced dead at 7:12 p.m. in the emergency room at Memorial Hosptial at Gulfport, Hargrove said.
Gulfport police Sgt. Josh Bromen said the phone call came in around 6 p.m. and officers arrived at the 3600 block of Sabine Street, finding Sparkman shot. Crime scene tape blocked off a home near a dead end of the road. Neighbors on scene said they did not hear gun shots and that the area is very quiet.
Police said they are trying to determine what happened but that there does not appear to be an active shooter and that the incident was not a drive-by shooting.
Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said officers know what type of weapon was used, but they would not release that information because it is part of the investigation.
Papania also said the family was “frantic and upset.”
At the scene Friday evening, Papania also asked the public to pray for Sparkman and his family.
Bromen said at 8:30 p.m. that police would not be releasing any new information Friday night.
