Bay St. Louis man dies in accidental drowning in Wolf River, police say

Bay St. Louis resident Miles Spears died in an accidental drowning Thursday in the Wolf River.

Harrison County sheriff’s deputies, Gulfport police and officers with the Department of Marine Resources responded to a report of swimmer apparently pulled under the water by a current.

Several witnesses saw Spears pulled underwater and attempted to rescue him, but were unable to do so, a release from Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson said.

Spears was swimming the area of the river near the Bells Ferry Bridge on Bells Ferry Road when he went missing.

Coast authorities searched for Spears’ body until it was found early Friday morning about 150 yards down river from the bridge.

No foul play was suspected.
