Meet the Sun Herald All-South Mississippi Girls Basketball Team for the 2021-22 season

Some of the state’s top girl’s basketball talent continues to thrive in South Mississippi.

Plenty of girls had phenomenal seasons during a campaign that saw the rise and dominance of several standout athletes.

Harrison Central swept the awards after making an appearance in the 6A state title game and sending two players to the Division I level.

Coach of the Year

Nancy Ladner, Harrison Central

Ladner coached the Red Rebelettes to yet another deep playoff run. Harrison Central was one of only two Coast girls teams to make the Final Four and the only one to play in the title game. The Red Rebelettes won 30 games this season and opened on a 19-game win streak.

Player of the Year

Hayleigh Breland, Harrison Central

Breland immediately took the reigns as Harrison Central’s newest point guard and guided the Red Rebelettes to a dominant season. The Jackson State signee averaged 15 points, 8 assists, 7 steal and 6 rebounds per game.

FANS’ CHOICE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Maddie Ladner, Hancock

Ladner won the Sun Herald Fan Vote Player of the Year honor after picking up over 50,000 votes. Ladner scored 14 points per game her senior season while adding six rebounds and 3 assists per contest.

Katelyn McLain finished second with 46,000 votes.

Sun Herald Starting Five

  • Hayleigh Breland, Harrison Central: Breland transferred in from Stone and made an immediate impact, leading HCHS to the 6A title game.
  • Simaru Fields, Gulfport: Fields was one of the highest scoring players on the Coast, averaging 18.2 points per game to go along with 5.4 rebounds and 3 steals per contest.
  • Valencia McFall, St, Martin: The senior averaged 14.5 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game. She led her team in assists, steals and blocks, as well.
  • Laila Walker, Harrison Central: The South Mississippi rebounding champion, Walker pulled down 13 rebounds per game while scoring 10.8 points per game. Walker signed to play at Jackson State.
  • Shaneal Corpuz, Biloxi: Corpuz averaged a double-double this season with 16.2 points and 11.2 rebounds per game.

All-South Mississippi girl’s basketball team

  • Katelyn McLain, Bay: McLain averaged 10.1 points per game and led her team in steals while making All-District for third year in a row.
  • Jasmyn Strobridge, St. Patrick: Strobridge was the South Mississippi scoring champion, averaging just over 21 points per game. She is continuing her career at East Georgia State College.
  • Bethany Graves, Pascagoula: The junior averaged 13.3 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.
  • Ashanti Moore, Pascagoula: The Jones College signee scored 15.3 points per game and pulled in 7.2 boards a game.
  • Yasmin Burley, Pascagoula: Burley scored 9.5 points and picked up 2.3 assists per game. She’s heading to Pearl River Community College.
  • Natalie Davis, Christian Collegiate: Davis averaged a double-double, scoring 10.1 points a game and hauling in 10.4 rebounds per game to go along with 3 blocks a night.
  • Marlana Moore, Long Beach: One of the Coast’s top scorers, Moore averaged 14.2 points per game for Long Beach.
  • Michaela Payton, Moss Point: Payton averaged 12.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and is committed to Southwest Community College.
  • Amiliyan Gines, Biloxi: Gines averaged 11.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.8 steals per game for Biloxi.
  • Ar’Yonna Miller, Moss Point:The senior put up 10.9 points a game and is committed to East Central Community College.
  • Abby Whaley, Our Lady Academy: Whaley pulled down 9 rebounds per game to go along with 3.5 points and 1.4 steals per contest.
  • Jamyria Robinson, St. Martin: Robinson brought down 8.3 boards and scored 3.9 points per game.
  • Kaileigh Bilbo, St. Martin: The senior scored 12 points a game and added 2.1 rebounds a game.
  • Anaisha Carriere, Harrison Central: Carrier averaged 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per game.
  • Brooklyn Cuevas, Hancock: The sophomore averaged 8 points and 3 steals per game.
  • Alicia Arnold, West Harrison: Arnold led West Harrison with 10.4 points per game while adding 3.4 steals per outing.
  • Taylor Hopgood, West Harrison: Hopgood scored 8 points and brought in 7.2 rebounds per game.
  • Kylah Bell, Pass Christian: Bell recorded 10.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game.
  • Daydria Cuevas, Pass Christian: Cuevas filled the stat sheet, averaging 7.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.2 blocks and 4.2 steals per game.
