Friday was a bad night to be the favorite. That’s perhaps the only way to describe the slate of high school football games involving ranked teams from the Coast.

Out of the seven games that involved ranked South Mississippi squads, the higher seed or ranked opponent went 0-7: No. 1 St. Stanislaus lost at Louisiana power Brother Martin 41-7; No. 2 Gulfport lost at No. 4 Picayune (25-7); No. 2 Harrison Central, which was tied with GHS, lost at unranked Pearl River Central 47-21; No. 5 Stone fell at No. 10 Poplarville 38-35; No. 6 George County lost at Pascagoula 36-29; No. 8 Moss Point lost at Greene County 49-28 and No. 9 St. Martin fell to visiting Crestview, Florida, 46-24.

In the Sun Herald’s Game of the Week at Picayune, the Maroon Tide (3-0) proved they’re for real by playing flawlessly against a potentially dangerous Gulfport (2-2) team.

“We held them to seven points,” Picayune coach Dodd Lee said. “I’ll take that every day of the week.”

Picayune opened the season unranked after a disappointing five-win campaign in 2015, but has climbed through the rankings in each of the last three weeks, from a tie for 8th, to 4th and now a unanimous 1st.

While the Tide is off to an impressive 3-0 start, Picayune’s players say they’re going to remain hungry.

“We're going to try to finish,” said linebacker Brian Taylor. “We're going to work as hard as we can. We're going to take every day like it's 0-0.”

The rest of the poll

No. 2 St. Stanislaus (3-1) slipped just one spot this week, with No. 3 Ocean Springs (2-1), No. 4 Poplarville (3-1) and No. 5 D’Iberville (2-1) rounding out the top half of the poll.

No. 6 Stone (3-1), No. 7 Gulfport (2-2), No. 8 Pearl River Central (2-1), No. 9 Harrison Central (2-1) and No. 10 East Central (3-1) round out the rankings.

D’Iberville, PRC and East Central are all newcomers this week. The Warriors are back in the rankings after a convincing 51-44 win at Oak Grove. East Central rolled Quitman 35-13.

Looking ahead

This Friday’s schedule is a bit watered down because a number of teams have bye weeks, but there’s still plenty of compelling matchups, including: St. Martin visits No. 10 East Central; No. 1 Picayune travels to No. 9 Harrison Central; No. 5 D’Iberville hosts No. 2 St. Stanislaus; Hancock heads to No. 4 Poplarville; No. 3 Ocean Springs welcomes Murrah; and No. 8 Pearl River Central goes to Slidell, Louisiana.
