Southern Miss officially announces Sam Gregg as new offensive coordinator

Southern Miss officially announced the hiring of former Liberty offensive line coach Sam Gregg as its offensive coordinator on Wednesday.

Gregg also will coach the offensive line, taking over the duties of the departed Jeremy Darveau.

Head coach Will Hall coached the 2021 season without an offensive coordinator on his 10-member full time staff, a rarity in today’s college football world.

Gregg was rumored to be joining Hall’s staff last year when Hall was first hired but ultimately remained with Liberty for a third season.

Hall and Gregg worked together as head coach and offensive line coach/offensive coordinator at West Alabama and West Georgia from 2008 to 2017.

In that time, Gregg coached 48 All-Conference players and two All-American offensive linemen.

“Sam is widely regarded in the profession as one of the top offensive line coaches in this country,” Hall said in the school’s press release. “He has helped build great offenses everywhere he has been. We have broken many school records together in our past... Better days are ahead for this program. Sam will only help us get there faster.”

The Golden Eagles finished last in the conference in total offense this year and allowed more tackles for loss than any other team in the country.

Southern Miss opens the 2022 season against Gregg’s former employer, Liberty.
