Volleyball roundup: Ocean Springs advances to Round 2 with sweep

It may be a new playoff season, but the Ocean Springs Greyhounds (29-9) found themselves in a familiar spot, picking up a 3-0 (25-8, 25-6, 25-12) first round volleyball Class III playoff victory over the Forest Hill Patriots Tuesday in Ocean Springs.

The Class III Region 7 winners put together an early eight-point run behind Valencia Schuler, who lead the Greyhounds with seven aces, to pull ahead quickly in route to picking up the first set. The Greyhounds did not let up in the second set, again putting together another long run, this one of eleven points powered by the serving of Davida Franklin.

Forest Hill won a few late points to make the third set more competitive before the Greyhounds closed out the match.

Juliana Mohler, Chloe Coulter, Abby Chapman, and Dougless St. Amant led the Greyhounds with four kills, and Melaina Migues tallied 19 assists. Kennedy Bahr picked up six digs.

The Greyhounds will travel to Oak Grove in the second round of the playoffs on Saturday. The Warriors knocked off Harrison Central 25-15, 25-20, 25-22.

"I'm excited to get a win and advance out of the first round of the playoffs," Ocean Springs coach Brooke Engle said. "We are going to have to prepare hard this week and be on top of our game this weekend. We have to be ready to play Oak Grove as well as we played them earlier this season."

Across the Coast

Oak Grove tops Harrison Central: The Lady Warriors defeated HCHS 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-22). Natasha Feyjoo led HCHS (18-15) with 19 kills and 12 digs. Zimar Feyjoo had 24 assists. Alondra Rodriguez had 12 points and 13 digs, while Sarynn Wright had 10 points and 11 digs. Kailey Morton also had 10 points.

"We're all very excited to have made the playoffs for the first time," coach Amanda Harrelson said. "The girls worked hard and never quit."

Hancock sweeps Brandon: The Lady Hawks made quick work of Brandon in the first round of the Class III playoffs, winning 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-14). Rylee Swilley led HHS (23-10) with 12 kills and 14 service points. Catie Ladner chipped in nine kills. Karringten Perkins and Jaylin Ladner both had seven kills. Brooke Fagan led HHS with 17 digs and also had 12 service points. Amanda Kay Shubert stepped in for injured setter Madison Ladner and finished with 21 assists and 10 points.

"The kids just picked it up and played really well (after Madison Ladner was hurt)," HHS coach Rick Rechtien said. "They really stuck together as a team and never gave up."

Hancock advances to play at the winner of Pearl-D'Iberville.

Vancleave falls to Ridgeland: Ridgeland won 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-17). Carly Danley led VHS (17-13) with nine kills. Sierra Buxton had 15 points and 15 digs. Payton McKerchie had four blocks.

Resurrection rolls: Resurrection defeated Bassfield 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-8) and will play Salem in Round 2 of the Class I playoffs.

In other Class II action: Columbia defeated Bay High 3-1 (27-25, 16-25, 25-19, 25-20) and Germantown defeated Gautier 25-14, 25-13, 25-19. Resurrection (27-4-1) def. Bassfield 25-10, 25-11, 25-8 and will play Salem in Round 2.
