Mississippi

Here’s a list of how Mississippi lawmakers voted on changing the state flag

Editor’s note: The House vote previously published was inaccurate and contained votes from Saturday instead of Sunday. The version below is correct.

On Sunday, the Mississippi Legislature voted to retire the Mississippi state flag with its Confederate battle emblem.

A nine-person commission with three appointees each from Gov. Tate Reeves, Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and House Speaker Philip Gunn will serve on a commission empowered to gather public input and design a new flag.

The design must be completed by Sept. 14 for a statewide referendum Nov. 3, when Mississippians can vote “yes” or “no” for the new design. If voters approve the design, the Legislature will adopt a new flag in January 2021.

If voters reject the new flag, the design and voting process will starts over.

MS House votes

In the House, the vote passed 91-23 with 1 absent or not voting (Gary Chism, R-Clay, Lowndes, Oktibbeha counties, District 37).
