Crash on I-10 bridge in South Mississippi sends driver off side and into water, MHP says

A collision between two cars Monday evening on the Pascagoula River Bridge closed both eastbound lanes after one driver crashed into the water, authorities said.

The driver who fell off the edge of the bridge “is out of the vehicle and OK,” with minor injuries, Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Landon Orozco said at 5:40 p.m. He said the other driver had serious injuries.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation reported the crash just after 5 p.m. and delays lasted more than two hours. Authorities first said the crash involved “multiple” cars but later clarified only two were involved.

Law enforcement on the bridge had begun detouring all eastbound traffic onto Exit 61 by 5:20 p.m., according to an MDOT alert. Traffic also slogged in the westbound lanes across the bridge.

Jackson County Fire Protection said on social media that it helped the Highway Patrol, Gautier Fire Department and Moss Point Fire Department using a rescue boat to save the driver. A photo posted by the agency shows a gray truck flipped and resting in shallow water.

The shut down was the third of the day on I-10. Earlier Monday, a separate crash briefly closed the interstate near the Menge Avenue exit after two passenger cars collided, injuring at least one person. A semi-truck and commercial vehicle also collided early Monday morning, closing both eastbound lanes of I-10 near the Mile 21 marker before they reopened at 8:15 a.m.
