Possible pothole solution will close parts of I-10 again tonight in South MS. Here’s more
Construction crews at the Menge Avenue exit on Interstate 10 will close lanes Wednesday and Thursday nights, the Mississippi Highway Patrol said.
Construction crews are working at Exit 24, near the site of the future Buc-ee’s Travel Center. The work will prompt intermittent lane closures for about six hours each night, authorities said. Construction will start at 7:30 p.m.
Construction crews are removing drains from beneath the I-10 shoulder, said Anna Ehrgott, a public information officer for the Mississippi Department of Transportation. The work, she added, should stop potholes from forming on the interstate.
Potholes have cracked the road and led to backups several times in recent months because MDOT is adding one lane to each direction of the interstate between Diamondhead and County Farm Road. Crews have widened the shoulder to shift traffic while they work in the median. But a drain beneath the shoulder cannot withstand the weight of large trucks. Heavy trucks that use the right lane put too much pressure on the drain, which has created the potholes.
Authorities asked drivers to stay cautious during construction and plan for extra travel time.
