Signs going up at Mississippi’s first Buc-ee’s. Here’s how close we are to the grand opening
A beaver mascot in his red hat is one of the first signs up on the Buc-ee’s travel center that’s opening in a few months in Harrison County.
The installation of signs is a bright, bold indication of the progress being made toward opening day.
Crews are working inside and out on the the sprawling parking lots, fresh-made fudge and brisket counters plus the walls where an incredible variety of jerky will be displayed.
South Mississippi residents and travelers passing by on I-10 have about four more months to wait. The grand opening celebration is planned in June, the company confirmed.
That’s when fans who know the lure of Beaver Nuggets and those who are wondering what’s so special about Buc-ee’s will all get a first look and taste of the first Buc-ee’s in Mississippi.
Hundreds of jobs need to be filled
The job fair for positions like cashiers, maintenance and food service typically is held about two months before the opening, the company said.
Buc-ee’s already posted jobs for management positions and expects to hire for 200 full-time positions.
The pay scale is posted at all the travel centers, and starts at $18 an hour for cashiers, maintenance, warehouse staff and stockers.
Those who want to apply for a position before the job fair can submit their application on the Buc-ee’s career page, with the store listed as Pass Christian.
Buc-ee’s impresses with its own treats
Most of the sandwiches, snacks and sweets sold at Buc-ee’s are their own brand. Their trademark products inspired two British guys — and lots of other people — to post online videos showing how impressed they are with the food and the scope of Buc-ee’s.
“This is insane,” one of the Brits says when passing the line of 120 fueling stations on their way into the 74,000 square foot gas station. “This is Buc-ee’s the other replies.”
Chopped brisket and fried chicken sandwiches are favorites, along with their own fried chips, kolaches and other pastries. The snack Buc-ee’s is most known for is the Beaver Nuggets, a sweet and crunchy cross between popcorn and corn pops.
It’s grab and go service, with no indoor seating but lots of people tailgating in the parking lot.
The company estimates 5 million visitors a year will stop at Buc-ee’s Harrison County to fill their bellies and their gas tanks.
