A man and his cousin had been arguing for several days before one of them fatally shot the other, Sheriff Mike Ezell said.

Mose Ben Wells, 57, will have his first court appearance on a murder charge Wednesday.

He is accused in the slaying of Eric Wendell Hampton, 38.

Hampton lived on the same street as Wells and other relatives.

“We’re told the cousins had been arguing over various things for several days and one got a gun and shot the other,” Ezell said.

“We’re just glad we were near the area and he (Wells) didn’t run.”

Family members and witnesses to the shooting at 16121 McGregor Road have told investigators of events in the house that led up to the shooting, Ezell said.

Deputies had responded to a report of a shooting at the home about 6:30 p.m. Monday. Hampton was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound at Ocean Springs Hospital, Ezell said.

Wells will appear before Jackson County Judge T. Larry Wilson, who will formally read the charges and consider the issue of bond.

Wells is held with no bond at the Jackson County jail.
