Police seek help in shooting that killed 1, wounded 2

GULFPORT -- Police want help to identify whoever shot three men, killing one and leaving two in serious condition.

Investigators are trying to determine who fatally shot Mitchell Weathersby on Wednesday night and wounded two others, police Sgt. Damon McDaniel said.

Coroner Gary Hargrove has said Weathersby, 54, died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police received several calls of shots fired around Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Evidence from an extended crime scene indicates the three men, who had been together, tried to get away, McDaniel said.

One person was found on the west side of U.S. 49 and another on the east side. Weathersby was found in a wrecked car on Louisiana Avenue, three blocks east of 49. The car had hit a utility pole, McDaniel said.
