GULFPORT -- A Gulfport man has died after a Wednesday night shooting in North Gulfport.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said Mitchell Weathersby, 54, was pronounced dead at Garden Park Hospital about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Hargrove said he died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Weathersby was one of three people shot Wednesday night in the area of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Louisiana Street in Gulfport.

Police Sgt. Damon McDaniel said officers responded to a call regarding shots fired.

"It was a pretty bad scene," he said. "We had three people with serious gunshot wounds that were all taken to area hospitals."

He said the three were found in different areas within the crime scene.

"One victim was on MLK and another was on Louisiana," he said. "When something like that happens, the natural instinct is to run and one person ran one way and the other person probably ran the other."

A third person, McDaniel said, crashed his car into a utility pole trying to escape the area.

"One guy who was shot got in his car made it across Highway 49 (but) crashed into a light pole on the other end of MLK," he said. "There were blue lights and first respondents all over MLK -- at both ends."

McDaniel said it has not yet been determined what type of gun was used in the shooting.

No arrests have been made in the case.
