MS Coast city employee arrested for embezzlement, making false statements, auditor says

A customer service representative for Gautier was arrested on a charge of felony embezzlement and making false statements in a case investigated by the state Auditor’s Office, a release said.

Alicia Landaverde, 40, was taken into custody Monday and jailed in Jackson County.

She is accused of embezzling money by reversing late fees paid by customers and then taking that money for her own personal use, the release said.

The state issued a demand for her to pay $8,514 for the alleged theft.

“We will continue to investigate cases, from small thefts to the largest public fraud case in state history, to ensure taxpayer dollars are protected,” said State Auditor Shad White.

District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath is prosecuting the case.

If convicted of all charges, Landaverde faces a maximum sentence of up to 25 years and up to $6,000 in fines.
