Bicyclist killed in Hancock County hit and run death identified by coroner

The victim in a fatal hit-and-run earlier this week has been identified by Hancock County Coroner Jeff Hair.

Randall Laws, 51, died of blunt force trauma Wednesday after a vehicle hit him on the U.S. 90 service road near Lower Bay Road in the Lakeshore community of Hancock County, Hair said.

Laws, of Bay St. Louis, was pronounced dead at the scene and was on his bicycle at the time of the crash.

Hair said the victim’s bicycle was his sole method of transportation.

“He very often rode his bicycle all over” the county, Hair said.

Laws was struck between 5:30 a.m. and 6 a.m., Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam told the Sun Herald. The driver of the SUV that hit him fled the scene and ditched his vehicle, but was later found by authorities.

Christopher Peterson, 35, is charged with felony hit and run causing death and is held at the Hancock County jail, WXXV-TV reported.
