Update: Driver charged with hit and run after fatal crash in Hancock County
One person is dead after a vehicle hit a pedestrian in the Lakeshore community of Hancock County, fire officials said Wednesday morning.
The incident happened between 5:30 a.m. and 6 a.m., Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam told the Sun Herald.
The driver fled the scene, Adam said, and the vehicle was found a short distance away.
WXXV reported the owner of the vehicle, Christopher Peterson, 35, was later located and arrested.
According to WXXV, Peterson is being charged with felony hit and run causing death. He is being held at the Hancock County jail, awaiting an initial appearance when a bond will be set.
The Bayside Fire Department responded to the scene and said the fatality occurred on the U.S. 90 service road near Lower Bay Road.
A photo shows the area blocked off with yellow police tape. Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies were also on scene.
Adam said he is not able to release the identity of the deceased pedestrian yet.
