Biloxi 15-year-old thought gun was unloaded, police say. Now his friend is dead.
A Biloxi teen accused of shooting a friend to death while playing with a gun first told authorities a stranger had entered the home and shot 17-year-old Kennedy Delfin, according to court records.
Benny Heip Lu, 15, was later arrested on a charge of manslaughter.
Police got the call to go Benny’s home around noon Saturday. When officers arrived, the records say, they found Kennedy in a rear bedroom with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Benny Lu and a 13-year-old were home at the time.
Benny was taken to the Biloxi Police Department for questioning, where he repeatedly told police a stranger had entered the home and shot and killed Kennedy, the report said.
After further questioning, Benny admitted Kennedy had a gun when he and the 13-year-old got to Benny’s home to hang out, the report said.
Benny said he and Kennedy were dancing around and playing with the gun when Benny pointed the gun at Kennedy and fired, the records say.
Kennedy was reaching toward the gun at the time of the shooting, the report says.
Benny told police said he didn’t think the gun was loaded, but never asked if it was.
Kennedy was alive when police got the home, but later died at Merit Health Hospital in Biloxi.
Benny was jailed in Harrison County on a $100,000 bond.
Editor’s note: In an earlier story, police said Lu’s first name was spelled Benny.
