A man was wounded in a shooting Monday in a confrontation at Creekwood North apartments on O’Neal Road in the northern part of Gulfport’s Orange Grove area.
Deputy Police Chief Chris Loposser said the shots followed an “altercation” early Monday afternoon at the complex a few blocks east of U.S. 49. The man was taken to a hospital by ambulance while investigators were trying to find other parties who were present when it happened, he said.
The shooting is the city’s second with injuries or death in less than two weeks, and both occurred at opposite ends of O’Neal Road. A man was fatally shot July 6 at O’Neal Road Apartments near Three Rivers Road.
Police were called to Monday’s shooting shortly before 1 p.m.
“We realized when we got here, after to speaking to witnesses, that there was an altercation with gunshots involved,” Loposser said.
The wounded man was shot once, he said.
No details were available on a motive or where the shooting occurred.
No crime-scene technicians were in sight, indicating the shooting may have happened inside an apartment.
No other details will be released pending investigation, Loposser said late Monday afternoon.
Two neighbors from a building adjacent to the crime-scene area said they each work a night shift and they woke up to a commotion Monday.
“I woke up to the sound of an ambulance backing up,” Rodney Leggett said. “I went out to take my trash out and I thought it was a dream until I looked over here.”
Police placed crime scene tape around a street south of the complex’s tennis court. The yellow tape stretched to one apartment building, ending at a ground-floor apartment. Investigators and marked and unmarked cars were still in the area an hour later.
“This is too close to home,” said a woman who was walking her dogs after she was awakened.
