Scrapin’ The Coast invites low-riders to take a little trip to see
They came in low-rider cars and low-rider trucks and even the truck-car hybrid, the El Camino. There were also trucks with tires so high a ladder was needed to get in them.
The 2016 Scrapin’ The Coast, one of the largest car shows in South Mississippi, was in full swing Saturday, bringing thousands of people to the Coast Coliseum and Convention Center.
The three-day celebration of all things fast and furious started Friday and ends Sunday.
Saturday’s events included a burnout competition and a hydraulics competitions.
Although the heat index Saturday hovered about 100, spectators flocked to the Coliseum’s grounds to see the latest in rims, glasspacks, lift kits and car-audio items. The midway was filled with thunderous bass notes booming from the sound systems of hundreds of cars and trucks.
Scott Payne made the trip down from Bogalusa in his metallic-blue ’98 Mustang.
Payne said he’s spent about $10,000 on his Mustang’s audio system.
“I’ve been working on my sound system for about four years now,” he said. “I love this show and this is the first year I’ve participated in it.”
His trunk was filled with audio equipment.
“I have four Skar Audio 8-inch speakers and a Pure 2K pre-amp,” he said. “It will definitely rattle the windows.”
Just how loud does his system get?
“I’ve gotten it up to 137 decibels,” he said.
According to hearnet.com, 137 decibels is the equivalent to the noise output from a jet engine at 100 feet.
For Payne, the Mustang is not just a car for show. It’s how he rolls.
“This is my car I use all of the time,” he said. “I’m not even finished with it — there’s always more stuff I want to do.”
