D'IBERVILLE -- Police are investigating the death of a 10-month-old baby and the apparent suicide of the child's father at Landmark Apartments.
Police Capt. Marty Griffin said police responded to a medical emergency at 4:11 a.m. Wednesday at the complex. American Medical Response personnel found the lifeless baby on the floor of the apartment.
The investigation revealed the child's father woke up his elderly father about 4 a.m. and said something was wrong with the baby. The grandfather found the baby unresponsive on the floor and dialed 911, Griffin said.
While he waited for first responders to arrive, the grandfather told police, his son became hysterical and ran out of the complex. Griffin said the father was found hanging from the stairwell of an adjacent building. AMR and fire personnel immediately began life-saving procedures, but the man was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
An autopsy will be performed on the baby to determine the cause of death, but Griffin said the suspicious death of any child is always treated as a homicide.
The D'Iberville Police Department is being assisted in the investigation by Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove.
Hargrove said he will not release the identity of the father or the infant during the investigation.
The D'Iberville Fire Department also responded to the 911 call.
