GULFPORT -- A man has died after police used a Taser on him in response to a disorderly conduct call at a restaurant, police said.
Officers were called to Shaggy's Restaurant on U.S. 90 near downtown about 4:27 p.m. after a complaint of erratic and disorderly behavior from man inside the business, said Sgt. Damon McDaniel in a press release.
The identity of a man who died after a Taser incident with a Gulfport police officer was being withheld Monday morning.
Police found the man outside the restaurant and attempted to investigate the incident, McDaniel said, but he was "resistive."
Officers deployed a Taser and handcuffed the 53-year-old man, but McDaniel said the man's erratic behavior continued and American Medical Response ambulance service was called to the scene.
The man was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead, he said, and Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove was summoned.
"Due to the nature and circumstances of the case, the Harrison County District Attorney's (Office) and Mississippi Bureau of Investigations were contacted for further investigation," McDaniel said in the release.
The investigation is ongoing and the SunHerald will update this story with more details as they are available.
