Volunteers sought for Long Beach park cleanup

LONG BEACH -- The Long Beach American Legion Post 1995, in coordination with the Long Beach Department of Parks and Recreation, are planning a community cleanup of War Memorial Park on Saturday.

Volunteers are needed, starting at 9 a.m. The park is on Church Avenue across from the First United Methodist Church.

According to the Long Beach Historical Society, 15 Long Beach mothers began meeting weekly in 1942 to pray for their sons and daughters serving in the Armed Forces. They organized into the Long Beach War Memorial Association in 1945 and began raising money for a memorial. They bought this site in 1950 and developed it into a park. Landscaping, playground equipment and a memorial shaft were added in 1951. The park was deeded to the city in 1952 " as a memorial to the 10 young men who gave their lives in service to their country during World War II."
