GULFPORT -- The owner of The Dock Bar and Grill, John Dane, is planning a park for recreational vehicles that will feature extra amenities.

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved allowing RV parks in industrial zones, where The Dock and land for the park are located.

Dane said he plans to build a 78-lot RV park on 12 acres off Seaway Road south of Interstate 10. He has 30 acres, so there will be room for expansion.

He hired a West Coast consultant to complete a survey and business plan before moving forward with the idea.

"RV sales across the country are booming right now," Dane said. "With the price of fuel going down, more and more people seem to be taking to this to see the country, travel and relax."

He hopes the Lake Gulfport RV Resort and Marina will be completed in time for Cruisin' The Coast in October, when visitors pour into town for a week of classic car cruising and viewing.

Dane said his will be the first higher-end RV park close to Interstate 10 between Mobile and New Orleans.

The park will have fenced areas for dogs to roam, a pool with a pavilion for entertaining, a clubhouse with gym and walking trails.

In addition to The Dock, Dane owns Seaway Marine Center, which has a fuel dock and dry storage next to the restaurant on Gulfport Lake.

Future expansion of the RV park would add RV storage and more RV pads.
