GULFPORT -- Soprema, a company that manufactures waterproof roofing membranes, is expanding its plant in the Bernard Bayou Industrial District by 38 percent to add warehouse space.
Mississippi-based Yates Construction is the contractor on the $1 million project.
Plant manager Kent Furcron said the expansion will not mean any additional jobs. He said the company has 24 permanent employees in the automated plant, including machine operators, and support, warehousing and shipping personnel. Its waterproof roofing membranes are manufactured for commercial buildings with low-slope or flat roofs. The company, he said, has outgrown its warehouse space for raw materials and finished product.
The Gulfport plant is one of more than 40 Soprema manufacturing plants worldwide. The only other American plant is in Wadsworth, Ohio, according to Soprema's website.

Furcron said the Gulfport plant also has one of Soprema's three training centers for clients and customers. He said architects, engineers and installers take courses at the center on the use of Soprema products.
Gulfport is centrally located for distribution by truck to Soprema's major Southeastern markets, including Texas and Florida.
Construction on 21,000 square feet of warehouse space started in November. Furcron expects the project to be finished in late spring.
