First responders with Harrison County Fire Rescue saved a dog that had been trapped for two days in an old well.
The dog, named Rascal, got under his owner’s house and fell into the 20-foot well Thursday night, Harrison County Fire Rescue said.
Harrison County Fire Chief Pat Sullivan said Rascal’s family had tried to get him out but eventually called for help Saturday night. With the permission of the homeowner, who was already working on the kitchen floor for a remodel, firefighters broke through the floor above the well and used a rope with a loop to pull the dog out.
“It’s not a rescue we do every day,” Sullivan said.
The firefighters coaxed Rascal out with treats and, after 45 minutes, he walked through the rope loop. Firefighters pulled the rope up, which tightened the loop on the dog as he rose, Sullivan said.
Rascal was healthy when firefighters retrieved him despite falling 20 feet and going two days without water or food, according to Sullivan. He said it was not the first time they have rescued a dog that has fallen into a well or gotten stuck in a pipe.
“We do train for those kinds of rescues,” Sullivan said. “It just doesn’t happen very often.”
