A car hit and killed a pedestrian Wednesday night in Gulfport, authorities said.

The man was pushing a bike on Highway 49 between 23rd and 24th streets around 9:30 p.m., Gulfport Police Lt. Jason DuCre said. A car swerved to avoid the pedestrian. But the next car did not see the man in time and hit him, according to police.

Authorities said the crash was an accident, and not connected to Cruisin’ The Coast. The driver of the car, a newer-model Cadillac, stayed at the scene while police investigated, DuCre said.

Police said the victim was homeless, wearing dark clothing and appeared to be picking up belongings he dropped in the road when the Cadillac hit him, DuCre said.

Authorities did not immediately name the victim.
